Identification:
Black bird with narrow white “v” behind bill. During breeding season, orange facial skin around bill, and white tufts on cheeks.
Distribution:
Resident from southern South America to Mexico and southern Texas, with range expanding into southwestern US.
Cool Facts:
The Neotropic Cormorant is one of two freshwater cormorants in North America, and the only cormorant to attempt plunge diving for fish; unlike its cousins the boobies, however, this species only risks dives from half a meter, and typically has a very low success rate.
