Phalacrocorax carbo

Identification:
Black bird with white patch on thighs and chin. Yellow facial skin at base of bill. During breeding season, has white frosting along neck.
Distribution:
Main distribution is widespread throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Reaches north America in eastern Canada and New England, with range progressively expanding south.
Cool Facts:
The Great Cormorant has the largest range of any cormorant, mostly in Eurasia and Africa; it was once uncommon to eastern Canada, but has been expanding south in recent decades. True to its name, this species weighs up to double that of the next largest North American cormorant.
