Identification:
Black bird with white patch on thighs. During breeding season, has red facial skin and light yellow bill. Compared to Pelagic Cormorant, has red facial skin on forehead, and dark eye.
Distribution:
Resident along the northern Pacific from Japan to Alaska.
Cool Facts:
The Red-Faced Cormorant reaches North America only in Alaska. In Asia, this species is the Red-Faced Shag. While all species of this family are known as cormorants in North America, Eurasian naming typically separates smooth-headed cormorants from crested shags.
