Identification:
Dark overall with white rump. Distinguished by relatively short legs, long notched tail, and bounding flight pattern. Pale carpal bar is distinct and extends to front edge of wing.
Distribution:
Nests from Japan around the Pacific Ocean to Baja California, and from Iceland to Norway in the Atlantic; also few off South Africa.
Cool Facts:
Continuing in the trend of names referencing water walking, the Leach’s Storm-petrel belongs to the genus Oceanodroma, Greek for “water running.” This bird breeds off both coasts of North America.
