Baking: Flesh-footed Shearwater

Ardenna carneipes

Length: 18 in Wingspan: 3-4 feet Weight: 1-2 lbs

Uniformly dark, with light pink bill and feet.

Nests in Australia and New Zealand. During non-breeding, moves throughout the western Pacific Ocean, with a few birds reaching western North America.

Cool Facts:

The Flesh-footed Shearwater bears the fitting species name carneipes, from Latin carnis meaning “flesh,” and pes meaning “foot.” It was recently split from the larger genus Puffinus, a naming relic from taxidermied shearwaters being incorrectly identified as puffins.
