Identification:
Male Wood Ducks have bright red eyes and bill, an iridescent green head with black and white accents, a reddish-brown breast, and iridescent blue on the wings.
Female Wood Ducks are gray to light brown overall, with a distinctive white teardrop around the eye.
Distribution:
Widespread year round throughout eastern and western North America. Present as far north as southern Canada during summer, and into Mexico and central US during winter.
Cool Facts:
Wood Ducks are cavity nesters, and will readily use nest boxes provided for them.
Wood Ducklings must leap from their nests in trees or cavities shortly after hatching to join their mother and forage for food. They may survive drops of over 50 feet.
