Identification:
Small blue bird with purple neck and head. Blue/gray bill with dark tip. Dark legs, gray to olive.
Distribution:
Summer along the gulf coast of US and Mexico, and through the Caribbean. Winter south through Mexico to southern Brazil.
Cool Facts:
The Little Blue Heron achieves its colorful blue and purple plumage as an adult; juveniles are solid white, perhaps a strategy to help them blend in with feeding flocks of the more common Snowy Egret.
