Identification:
Large black bird with thin, snakelike neck and pointed yellow bill. White along greater coverts and accents on back. Neck and head are black in male, light brown in female.
Distribution:
Resident from the southeastern United States to northern Argentina.
Cool Facts:
The Anhinga is an aquatic bird that uses its sharp beak to spear fish. While swimming, it has a tendency to keep its body submerged and only reveals its long, snakelike neck above the surface, earning this species the colloquial name of Snakebird.
