Identification:
The largest North American shearwater. Clean light underwing. Yellow/orange bill and dark brown head/neck.
Distribution:
Nest on the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. Winter mainly off south Africa. From June through October, few birds wander open ocean waters along the eastern US.
Cool Facts:
Breeding Cory’s Shearwaters tend to forage near their breeding colonies, so birds spotted off the eastern US are likely immature or non-breeding.
