Identification:
Long neck with white front, black back. Long yellow to olive bill. Black cap with black extending below eye.
Distribution:
Breed in western and central United States and Canada. Winter along the Pacific Coast. Year-round resident in central Mexico.
Cool Facts:
The genus name Aechmophorus is Latin for “spear bearing,” an apt description for this fish-eater’s spear-like bill.
