Identification:
Black neck with white stripes along breast, sides, and throat. Gray head and back of neck. Compared to Pacific Loon, bill is heavier and white patch extends onto side of flanks.
Distribution:
Small range in North America, reaching only the Seward Peninsula in Alaska in summer.
Cool Facts:
Although the Arctic Loon is uncommon in North America, its main range wraps around the Eastern Hemisphere, all the way from eastern Russia to the United Kingdom.
In other parts of the world, the Arctic Loon is known as Black-throated Loon or Black-throated Diver.
