Identification:
In summer, male is grayish-brown with black speckling on chest and a white belly, female is barred brown. In winter, both sexes completely white. Tail white, and wings white.
Distribution:
Resident of northwestern North America from Alaska to Idaho, and some populations in Colorado mountains.
Cool Facts:
The White-tailed Ptarmigan is a cold weather bird, and may be seen bathing in snow if temperatures rise higher than 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
The White-tailed Ptarmigan is the smallest of the ptarmigans, and its range reaches the farthest south.
