Identification:
In summer, male has a reddish brown head and breast with white body, female is barred brown. In winter, both sexes completely white. Tail black, and wings white.
Distribution:
Resident of the tundra in Alaska and northern Canada.
Cool Facts:
The subspecies of Willow Ptarmigan that lives in Great Britain, the “Red Grouse,” does not transition to white plumage in the winter.
The Willow Ptarmigan is the largest and most numerous of the three ptarmigan species in the world.
