Identification:
Male is dark gray black tail, tipped in light gray. Bare skin on side of neck, yellow to light orange.
Distribution:
Resident of coastal North America from northern California to Alaska.
Cool Facts:
The Sooty Grouse was formerly considered the same species as the Dusky Grouse, together known as Blue Grouse.
Most bird species have a consistent number of tail feathers, but the Sooty Grouse can have anywhere from 15 to 22.
