Male has reddish sides and scaled belly, with black and white face and comma shaped head plume. Female has muted marking of male, and smaller head plume.
Distribution:
Resident from Baja Mexico north along Pacific Coast to southern British Columbia.
Cool Facts:
The head plume of California Quail is called a topknot, and is made up of several overlapping feathers.
This is California’s state bird, and has been depicted in several Disney films including Bambi.
