Identification:
Male has a green head, white breast, and cinnamon sides. Both male and female have distinctively large, shovel-like bills.
Distribution:
Summer resident across North America into far northern Alaska and Canada. Winter resident in southern US, Mexico, and South America.
Cool Facts:
The Northern Shoveler’s bill is upwards of 14% of its body length, and lined with fine projections called lamellae that strain food out of water.
