Anas rubripes
Length: 21-23 in Weight: 1.5-3.5 lbs
Identification:
Similar to female Mallard, but darker overall with a grayish face and olive/yellow bill. Male and female American Black Ducks look similar.
Distribution:
Present in eastern North America. Breed as far north as northern Canada, and winter south to the Gulf Coast.
Cool Facts:
American Black Ducks hybridize regularly with Mallards. While hybridization is not a large concern for a widespread species like the Mallard, there is some concern that this hybridization may exacerbate the slow population decline of American Black Ducks.
