Light overall, especially underneath in flight. Gray streaking on head and barring on wings, with rufous shoulder and thighs.

The Ferruginous Hawk, named for its rust-colored shoulders and thighs, is the largest Buteo hawk in North America, and is outsized worldwide only by the Upland Buzzard of Asia, which may be a relative from the time of the Alaska-Siberia land bridge.
