Identification:
Gray back and light front with reddish barring. Compared to Sharp-Shinned Hawk, Cooper’s is larger (roughly crow sized), has a round-ended tail, and has larger head. In flight, tail is long and wings are rounded.

Relative to soaring hawks, accipiters like the Cooper’s Hawk have long, slender toes and needle-like talons used to repeatedly puncture prey to death, rather than crushing it.
