A large, chicken-like bird. Brown overall with a gray head and red throat pouch.

Distribution: 

Resident along Gulf Coast of Mexico from Yucatan Peninsula to extreme southern Texas.

Cool Facts:

The Plain Chachalaca is the only member of its family (over 50 species) that can be found in the United States.

Despite its size and chicken-like appearance, Chachalacas enjoy spending a surprising amount of time in trees.
