Identification:
Male has unmistakably garish black, white, and red plumage, like a court jester. Female has white face and dot behind eye.
Distribution:
Breed along Northwestern North America into Alaska, and in Northeastern Canada. Winter along the northern Pacific Coast, and along the Atlantic coast.
Cool Facts:
The Harlequin Duck takes its name from its appearance resembling a court jester. Its Latin name “histrio” similarly means “actor.”
Colloquially names for the Harlequin Duck include squeaker and sea mouse come from the rodent-like squeaks made by these ducks when distressed.
