Somateria spectabilis

Identification:
Male has a black body and white breast, with a brilliant blue, green, orange and red head. Female is lighter and less heavily barred than Common Eider.
Distribution:
Breed coastally in far northern Alaska and Canada. Winter on the Aleutian Islands and Newfoundland, straying into surrounding oceans.
Cool Facts:
King Eiders can dive upwards of 80 feet to feed on seabeds.
Female eiders tend their nests alone, and may go at least a week without leaving for food.
