Aythya affinis
Length: 15-22 Weight: 1.5-3 lbs
Identification:
Male has a black head, breast, and rear with white belly and grayish back. Female is dark brown with white accent behind bill. Compared to Greater Scaup, has more angular head, with peak closer to back when relaxed
Distribution:
Summer resident in far northern Alaska and Canada. Winter resident throughout southern US and Mexico.
Cool Facts:
Scaup are colloquially known as bluebills due to their distinctive bluish bills.
The scientific name “affinis” comes from the Latin “related to,” and Lesser Scaup certainly do look VERY similar to Greater Scaup.
