Identification:
Male has a black head and back with a white spur low on the neck. Female is dark brown with white accents around eye and bill.
Distribution:
Summer resident across North America into far northern Alaska and Canada. Winter resident in southern US and Mexico.
Cool Facts:
The names ring-necked and collaris refer not to the white necklace of this duck, but rather a reddish collar higher on the neck that is very difficult to see in the field.
