Identification:
Male has a long, narrow tail and distinct brown head with white line extending down neck to breast. Female has slightly sharper tale and longer, more graceful neck than other female ducks.
Distribution:
Summer resident into far northern Alaska and Canada. Winter resident in southern US, Mexico, and northern South America.
Cool Facts:
The scientific name Anas acuta means “pointed duck” in Latin; a fitting moniker considering the Pintail’s distinctive long, graceful tail.
Pintails are one of the earliest breeding ducks in North America.
